Target Audience Research- Shape

Image
With around 5 million subscribers in total, Shape is able to transform the beauty and lifestyle genre of magazines. Directed towards a younger to middle age demographic, Shape aims their magazines and digital media posts toward college graduates, married, and employed women. Whereas our issues are more directed towards both genders in a similar social group; specifically people who are involved in their community and have a healthy and active lifestyle. Shape magazine has a target audience of women ages 25 to 39.  As for their marketing plan, Shape magazine utilizes print, social media, and online blog posts. In 2016, Shape converted to a digital platform and ceased their print media style; this was due to shift in popular demand by attracting a wider array of viewers and has enabled them to expand their audience. Because their younger viewers tends to prefer a more digital form of media, Shape posts photos on Instagram as a way of branding certain issues of their magazine by inclu...

Feedback/ Revisions

After presenting my Mid Term Submission to the class, I received feedback from my peers about changes I should make and things that I did well on. Most people liked the pictures I included on each page but suggested that I increase the size of them. I agreed so as part of my revisions I will enlarge my pictures so they are easier to see. My peers also like the bright colors I used on my cover and Table of Contents. In relation to my groups issues of our magazine, I saw comments about the continuity and they thought it was well organized. Other said that my magazine looked professional and others said that the table of contents and article could use some adjusting as to the layout, and I will take that into consideration when I start to revise my project. Some other feedback I got was that the fonts on my cover varied too much and the white color was hard to see in some places. I plan on moving around some of the subheadings and changing their color as well. While I presented my project...

Use of Conventions

Throughout my magazine, I utilized conventions I saw in magazines that I previously researched to create a product very similar to theirs. Cover: On the cover of my magazine, the cover model is located at the center of page and I decided to keep the background as opposed to photo-shopping my model out of the picture because there was so much white space. I felt that with the background, it created a more cohesive piece. I mimicked the conventional way that magazines use their cover models because they have some with solid, neutral colored backgrounds, and then some with atmospheric backgrounds. The title also follows the conventional methods because it is located at the top of the page in a bold font that fits the entire span of the page. Easy to read, and in a general font, the phrase" 'Sota Wellness" is very similar to Health and Women's Health magazines. On each issue in our magazine, we used the same font in the same location so that also matches the conventions....

Mid Term Submission

Image
My magazine rough draft consists of a cover page with skateboarder, Jake Ilardi, depicted on the front. There are 4 articles mentioned on my cover page and focus on dieting, exercising, and skincare, similar to all of the magazines my group researched. Located at the top of the page is our title, 'Sota Wellness in a bold, blue font. The issue of my magazine is to be manufactured February of 2019 and that is made explicitly clear at the top of my Table of Contents. To right of the month and year is a picture that I took of girl doing a back-handspring in which I removed the background. I looked to Shape Magazine for inspiration for the format of my table of contents; I decided to include Food, Fitness, and Wellness articles in my table of contents as well as their page numbers in a bold font. The phrase "Happy Mind, Happy Life" appears in a yellow font under the Wellness column of the table of contents as a reminder to our audience. Underneath that is the list of articles...

Scheduling Photo Shoots

Image
My first interaction with my cover model, Jake Ilardi, was when I met him at the skate park to do his photo shoot; we later realized the weather was not going to let us do the photo shoot at the park.  His interview and photo shoot happened to be on the same day because he had just come into town the night before from California, where he lives. I would've taken pictures and interviews much sooner than the 19th, but Jake was only here for a short amount of time and I wanted to do the interview in person rather than over the phone. I decided to take action shots of Jake doing tricks in the skateboarding strip rather than a skate park because the weather did not permit taking any sort of photos outside during the time Jake was in town. I enjoyed working with Jake because he was very easygoing and was able to do everything I asked and I chose this selection of pictures because they represent what he is best at. During the process of scheduling, I had to stay in touch with Jake as he g...

Scouting Locations for Photo Shoots

Image
When scouting locations for my photo shoot I looked around Sarasota and online to see some of the best skate parks in town. After coming up with two places, Payne Park and Bradenton Riverwalk Skatepark, I decided that Payne Park was the better alternative because it is in the center of town, and it worked best for the people that I will be interviewing. Payne Park has multiple different skate pools, and different areas that I can take professional pictures. Payne not only has the skateboarding area, but it also has nice, grassy hills surrounding the park and a paved "street" for those who are looking to exercise. Overall, it was the the more appealing skate park with more beneficial qualities. I also wanted to include other "filler" pictures of Sarasota such as pictures of Nathan Benderson Park and the Celery Fields. Nathan Benderson Park is a paved loop where a lot of people and tourists like to go on walks, run, and skate; basically to enjoy any form of exercise. ...

Schedule Interviews and Developing Questions

For my main issue of my magazine, I decided to focus it on skateboarding and how it effects your health. I personally know the two people that I am interviewing which made it easier for me to ask them the following questions. Their ages represent their social groups and clearly identify the target audience. When determining when we would schedule our interview I had to take into account when they were both available. Jake Ilardi came into town on Tuesday morning from California and said he was available that afternoon. I would've done it sooner but because he lives in a different state I wanted to be able to do it in person. When scheduling my interview with Tim Stork I had to work around his schedule because he skateboards in his free-time. As a career he works as a youth pastor and event coordinator at First Baptist Church of Sarasota. He was also free to come to Payne Park and participate in his interview after Jake's interview. I based all of the questions on the type of li...
