Mid Term Submission

Image
My magazine rough draft consists of a cover page with skateboarder, Jake Ilardi, depicted on the front. There are 4 articles mentioned on my cover page and focus on dieting, exercising, and skincare, similar to all of the magazines my group researched. Located at the top of the page is our title, 'Sota Wellness in a bold, blue font. The issue of my magazine is to be manufactured February of 2019 and that is made explicitly clear at the top of my Table of Contents. To right of the month and year is a picture that I took of girl doing a back-handspring in which I removed the background. I looked to Shape Magazine for inspiration for the format of my table of contents; I decided to include Food, Fitness, and Wellness articles in my table of contents as well as their page numbers in a bold font. The phrase "Happy Mind, Happy Life" appears in a yellow font under the Wellness column of the table of contents as a reminder to our audience. Underneath that is the list of articles...

Scheduling Photo Shoots

Image
My first interaction with my cover model, Jake Ilardi, was when I met him at the skate park to do his photo shoot; we later realized the weather was not going to let us do the photo shoot at the park.  His interview and photo shoot happened to be on the same day because he had just come into town the night before from California, where he lives. I would've taken pictures and interviews much sooner than the 19th, but Jake was only here for a short amount of time and I wanted to do the interview in person rather than over the phone. I decided to take action shots of Jake doing tricks in the skateboarding strip rather than a skate park because the weather did not permit taking any sort of photos outside during the time Jake was in town. I enjoyed working with Jake because he was very easygoing and was able to do everything I asked and I chose this selection of pictures because they represent what he is best at. During the process of scheduling, I had to stay in touch with Jake as he g...

Scouting Locations for Photo Shoots

Image
When scouting locations for my photo shoot I looked around Sarasota and online to see some of the best skate parks in town. After coming up with two places, Payne Park and Bradenton Riverwalk Skatepark, I decided that Payne Park was the better alternative because it is in the center of town, and it worked best for the people that I will be interviewing. Payne Park has multiple different skate pools, and different areas that I can take professional pictures. Payne not only has the skateboarding area, but it also has nice, grassy hills surrounding the park and a paved "street" for those who are looking to exercise. Overall, it was the the more appealing skate park with more beneficial qualities. I also wanted to include other "filler" pictures of Sarasota such as pictures of Nathan Benderson Park and the Celery Fields. Nathan Benderson Park is a paved loop where a lot of people and tourists like to go on walks, run, and skate; basically to enjoy any form of exercise. ...

Schedule Interviews and Developing Questions

For my main issue of my magazine, I decided to focus it on skateboarding and how it effects your health. I personally know the two people that I am interviewing which made it easier for me to ask them the following questions. Their ages represent their social groups and clearly identify the target audience. When determining when we would schedule our interview I had to take into account when they were both available. Jake Ilardi came into town on Tuesday morning from California and said he was available that afternoon. I would've done it sooner but because he lives in a different state I wanted to be able to do it in person. When scheduling my interview with Tim Stork I had to work around his schedule because he skateboards in his free-time. As a career he works as a youth pastor and event coordinator at First Baptist Church of Sarasota. He was also free to come to Payne Park and participate in his interview after Jake's interview. I based all of the questions on the type of li...

Flat Plan

Image
When doing the magazine flat plan, I chose to separate the articles with ads similarly to those in the magazine that I researched. All of the articles on my flat plan revolve around the following: health, skincare, dieting, exercise, mental wellness, Op-Eds, and workout apparel. I have 50 ads and about 25 articles and most of the articles take up 1 or 2 pages, based on how I thought the articles would be written. However, I included one featured article that take up three pages because I thought it would be longer and could possibly be written in more detail. Consequently, most of my articles surround activities in Sarasota because our target audience is local teens and young adults. Most of the titles ask rhetorical questions or small catch phrases to draw our readers in. There is a wide range of articles, from "Benefits of Veganism" to "Active Apparel of the Year" that are unique to our magazine. In my group, we came up with specific articles we would have in eve...

Table of Contents Template

Image
For my table of contents, I looked to the magazines I researched for inspiration. I wanted all of the content of the magazine to be the center of attention and put all the other materials around it. I put the the subheadings in a horizontal fashion so that the reader could glance across the page and see most of the articles incorporated in the issue. The main title of the table of contents is 'February' because that is the month of my issue. My group and I chose months from December of 2018, to March of 2019. We all replicated our table of contents to those we researched but have slight differences in format to make each of our magazines unique. I chose to have two pictures on my magazine to fill the page. Next to the title of the table of contents I would like to put a picture of skateboards or something regarding fitness to match the theme of my magazine. At the bottom of the page, I will put the date of the issue but I if I were to do the entire issue I would account for the...

Cover Template

Image
When we first thought about naming our magazine, we were deciding between a one or two word title. Some of our options included Sarasota Fitness, Fitness, Wellness, and Sarasota Health and we even tried combining words, but that was not our favorite option. Then one of our group members thought it was smart to shorten Sarasota to just 'Sota and we all thought that was clever. Then we had to decide what word best fit our style of magazine. That is how we ended up choosing the title 'Sota Wellness. On our covers, we chose the same bold font located at the top of our pages but on my cover, I chose to do a navy blue color to represent the attitude of my cover model; confident but relaxed. The 'W' and 'E' in 'Wellness' will most likely be covered by by the models head, similar to that of all the magazines that I researched; it will cover about how the letter so that the reader will still be able to know what the full title says. My main article will be the bi...
