Magazine Project Genre Research- Health

Image
Health magazine, a dieting and weight loss platform, guides women towards a healthier lifestyle. In April of 2014, Brooke Burke-Charvet is depicted in the center of the magazine in a pair flashy neon-yellow pants and a black top. Around her are topics surrounding the monthly articles inside the magazine; weight loss, allergy cleanse, emotional wellness, and dieting. All of the topics are in coordinating fonts and attractive colors so that they do not clash with her outfit. The use of black, gray, and orange font color makes the product more visually attractive. The title 'Health' is in the same bold font as Shape and Health which makes sense because all health and fitness magazines look very similar to each other. On every issue of Health there is a phrase "Happy Begins Here" which ties all of the issues together and creates uniformity. There is also a bright blue circle in the top right corner which gives the audience the name of the cover model and the big story in...

Magazine Project Genre Research- Self

Image
Self magazine similar to the others, focuses on fitness, food, health, and beauty. This issue utilizes bold, block fonts and pink and orange tones for a more feminine appeal. Minka Kelly, the cover model shown, is posing in specific clothes for her article. The audience sees she is wearing jeans, but must look closer to see that the article is a "Skinny Jeans Workout". Other than the title, the other two phrases on the cover that grab the readers attention are "Flatten Your Belly" and "Make Today Happier" which was intentionally put in a larger font and bright colors to attract their target audience: younger and middle aged women. In this specific issue, we know that the articles will surround ab exercises, beauty 'secrets', medical advice, healthy eating, and emotional wellness. But in every issue we are sure to see full body workout techniques, culture and news articles, and columnist pieces. These are separated by advertisements and are usually...

Magazine Project Genre Research- Men's Health

Image
In this issue of Men's Health, James Marsden is the cover model surrounded by bold fonts about improving your physique and health. Above the main title is the phrase, "The 6 New Rules of Strength" which is the main article for the magazine. That phrase is important because it appears on most issues and creates uniformity between all of them. Similar to all of the other magazines I have researched, Men's Health magazine uses white and neutral tones behind the cover model for a less distracting product. Additionally on every issue, the cover model is a male because the target audience for this magazine is middle aged men as well as fitness instructors and men trying to exercise more. The story blurbs around the cover model are in large red and black fonts with a few of them having a yellow star and arrow behind them to draw more attention to those specific articles. The magazine, as a whole, focuses on weight loss, fitness and health; basically how to improve male phys...

Magazine Project Genre Research- Women's Health

Image
Women's Health is a widely known form of print media that focuses on health, nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle. Chrissy Teigen is pictured on the cover of this magazine, surrounded by various phrases about staying fit and how to live a better life. The bold fonts and use of bright colors attracts a younger target audience but is also creates a more visually attractive piece. Similar to Shape magazine, the title "Women's Health" is the largest item on the page, besides the cover model. The articles in this specific issue are about lifestyle, exercising, healthy eating. They are evenly spread throughout the magazine, every article being about 7 to 10 pages apart and food and wellness ads in between. This separation of articles keeps the audience interested but also making sure that they do not run out of content for the rest of the magazine. Specifically, the Food and Weight sections of the magazine are on pages 72-74. Physical Fitness articles can be located on pages ...

Magazine Project Genre Research- Shape

Image
This issue of Shape magazine displays Carrie Underwood in a flattering black tank top and skinny jeans. Around her are catchy phrases that emphasize a desire for a healthier lifestyle. Multiple different bold fonts and similar colors create a more coordinated piece. The title of the magazine is the same on every issue in a large eye-catching font and the slogan "Be beautiful Be in Shape"; this is an important aspect of the magazine because similar slogans are used on every issue of Shape. Continually on every cover, a model is seen posing for the issue and her head takes the place of the 'A'. The background behind the model is always a neutral tone as well; whites and grays are utilized to present a clean format. Similar to our genre of magazine, most of the featured articles are related to health and fitness as well as maintaining the "perfect" body shape. Articles that appear frequently in their magazines are lifestyle, healthy eating, fitness, weight loss...

Project Selection- My Decision

I decided to do the magazine project as a group. I think it is the best fit for me because my writing skills outweigh my directing skills. Continually, I feel that my photography skills will be more advantageous when used in the magazine. My organized nature and eye for small details will be helpful in creating the best product. I have chosen to work in a group with 3 other people and we collectively decided on a active and health lifestyle magazine. The target audience for this project would be towards teens and young adults who are currently or pursuing a healthier life. I have chosen to do an issue on teens that go one of Sarasota's local skate parks. I would interview the skateboarders and ask them about how skateboarding benefits their health. One member of the group will focus on the food aspect of healthy living and the benefits of having a more balanced diet. Another will go to local athletic centers and private owned businesses to talk to young adults about how they mainta...

Project Selection- Film

I think the film project would be a good selection for me because I am interested in the editing process as well as viewing films from a wide range of genres. The film production process is fascinating because it allows the director to use camera shots, angles, sounds and mise-en-scene to portray many different emotions. In ' The Newsroom ' and ' Ferris Buellers Day Off', the use of incidental music and close ups provide a connection between the audience and actors. In viewing these films, I was able to see how the director wanted the film to be depicted and how he wanted the audience to get a feel for each character. Additionally, watching ' The Making of Ferris Bueller ' showed me that not everything is as perfect behind the scenes than it is on screen.  As a visual learner, this project would be somewhere I can excel, however, I think the directing aspect of it would be a challenge. I have been apart of a few plays and musicals so I do well in front of an aud...
