Magazine Project Genre Research- Self

Self magazine similar to the others, focuses on fitness, food, health, and beauty. This issue utilizes bold, block fonts and pink and orange tones for a more feminine appeal. Minka Kelly, the cover model shown, is posing in specific clothes for her article. The audience sees she is wearing jeans, but must look closer to see that the article is a "Skinny Jeans Workout". Other than the title, the other two phrases on the cover that grab the readers attention are "Flatten Your Belly" and "Make Today Happier" which was intentionally put in a larger font and bright colors to attract their target audience: younger and middle aged women. In this specific issue, we know that the articles will surround ab exercises, beauty 'secrets', medical advice, healthy eating, and emotional wellness. But in every issue we are sure to see full body workout techniques, culture and news articles, and columnist pieces. These are separated by advertisements and are usually about 5 pages apart. The ads in Self magazines promote healthier foods choices, makeup products, exercise apparel, and healthcare products. These ads are found on about every other page and strategically separate the articles so that the readers stay interested. On the table of contents there could be a plate of healthy food, a woman exercising, or a posed model; the pictures depend on the season and articles in the specific issue. Self magazine is distributed to about 1.5 million people making it one of the most popular health and wellness magazines in the United States. If we were to produce our magazine in reference to Self, we would distribute approximately 200,000 copies. Due to its popularity, Self was awarded Best Personal Service in 2006 and was nominated for a National Magazine Award in 2008. As a whole, Self magazine works to promote a positive body image by producing a captivating piece of print media which has appealed to a vast audience.
