Magazine Project Genre Research- Men's Health

In this issue of Men's Health, James Marsden is the cover model surrounded by bold fonts about improving your physique and health. Above the main title is the phrase, "The 6 New Rules of Strength" which is the main article for the magazine. That phrase is important because it appears on most issues and creates uniformity between all of them. Similar to all of the other magazines I have researched, Men's Health magazine uses white and neutral tones behind the cover model for a less distracting product. Additionally on every issue, the cover model is a male because the target audience for this magazine is middle aged men as well as fitness instructors and men trying to exercise more. The story blurbs around the cover model are in large red and black fonts with a few of them having a yellow star and arrow behind them to draw more attention to those specific articles. The magazine, as a whole, focuses on weight loss, fitness and health; basically how to improve male physical appearance. Other articles surround the topics of grooming, style, news, and entertainment. These are all spread throughout the issue and each article is about 5 to 7 pages apart with some being every 2 to 3 pages apart. The advertisements displayed throughout the magazines include athletic apparel, protein supplements, and healthy food options. About every other page you can find an advertisement, and based on the article, the advertisement on the next page will correlate with the topic; if there is an interview with a body builder about how he bulks, the ad would be about protein powders and supplements. Men's Health magazine is the largest men's magazine brand in the world and the best-selling men's magazine in the United States. It has a distribution number of about 1.8 million with many awards. Based on this circulation, if we were to distribute our magazine similar to Men's Health, it would be around 300,000. In 2004, Men's Health won their first award for its Personal Service category. In 2010, they received the General Excellence award and two years later they won the 2012 National Magazine Award in the Personal Service again, for its Digital Media category for "Skin Cancer Center". Most recently, in 2017, Men's Health made the Ad Age magazine of the year.
